From Root to Remedy...

This one-day intensive invites students, practitioners, and curious minds to explore three of the most foundational methods in herbal medicine — infusions, decoctions, and tinctures — through two of history's most enduring traditions: the medical herbalism of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Greco-Roman spiritual herbalism of alchemy. During this six hour course, participants will move from theory to practice, grounding ancient frameworks in hands-on preparation and lived experience.

This course will be led by Dr. Patrick Mansfield DAOM, L.Ac, Professor of Herbal Medicine at the European Institute of Integrative Health Sciences, with over eight years of clinical and academic experience in herbal medicine and a deep personal practice in botanical preparation and alchemical research.

Part 1 -Morning Lectures

Part One — Theory (3 hours)

The morning session establishes the foundations of philosophical and clinical frameworks that will animate the afternoon's practical work.

  • Introduction to the three preparation methods: infusion, decoction, and tincture

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbal preparations

  • Zosimos of Panopolis and the alchemical tradition

  • Points of convergence where TCM and alchemical philosophy speak converge

Part 2 - Afternoon Laboratory hand-on

Part Two — Practical (3 hours)

Afternoon session moves into the laboratory. Working with selected botanicals, participants prepare all three preparations themselves, guided by both the clinical reasoning of TCM and the transformative philosophy of alchemy.

  • Preparing an infusions: technique, timing, and the plants best suited to this method

  • Preparing a decoction: how increased heat and duration change the extraction

  • Preparing a tincture: menstruum selection, maceration, and the role of alcohol

  • Sensory engagement throughout: smell, taste, colour, and observation as tools

  • Closing reflection: what we have made, and what tradition we are participating in
